Moving an HVAC unit in our coop

Hi Everyone, i recently purchased my first apt in an NYC coop. its a large alcove studio that i want to turn into a legit 1 bedroom. The issue is that the HVAC is ijn the way and the current setup would require some unique thing that nobody is sure of to build over the HVAC to be part of the wall - not sure this will look too good. My contractor made it seem like a huge deal and not something to mess with. Wondering if anyone has ever done this and if its really that big a deal. Its not one of those units that sticks outside the building btw. Any thoughts?
