this building was originally built w two railroad flats per floor. in 1947 the apartments were legally cut in half and the current configuration of four per floor was created. the front apartments became studios and the back ones small became one bedrooms. a new bathroom and kitchen were built for the front units at their rears, their bathrooms are actually placed in the old connecting hallway to the back apartments, and abut the back apartments' bedrooms. these added bathrooms are small and have a shower instead of a tub due to space considerations. the original bathrooms and kitchens are in the back apartments. there is an old sealed dumbwaiter shaft between the kitchens of the east and west back apartments. there are old sealed fireplaces in all the living rooms, some of which have now been revealed through new renovations. one unusual thing is that the floors are not numbered but lettered, for example the second floor is the B level an the third floor is the C level, with the apartments numbers after their floor designations. the rear units are _1 and _4, and front studios are _2 and _3. The front units are rather sunny as they face the street and south, and the back units are rather dark as they face north and a small backyard . there is an air shaft midway back from the street on either side, which gives a window to the back apartments' bedrooms and the front apartments' kitchen, with no view and no light of course.
