Two winters ago my tenant went on vacation in December and turned the heating off! Pipes froze, burst and flooded the condo below. The owner of the condo below claimed on his insurance. The cost I believe to be substantial as the owner was moved into a hotel for 3 months. My tenant had undertaken in the lease to take out renters insurance. I had never asked to see the tenants insurance. The tenancy was in the name of the tenant but his rent was paid by a large multinational corporation as they had moved him to US from overseas. I just received a letter from attorneys of the insurance company of the below owner stating that according to the tenant he didn't have insurance and I should put my insurance company on notice and have them contact the attorneys. As you can imagine I don’t want my insurance company to take the hit as it will cost me in future premiums. Should I behave differently going forward? Is my insurance likely to take the hit? I am now with a different insurance company and tenancy ended 12 months ago. Appreciate your thoughts [less]
