My husband and I (we are both men) were just turned down by the board at 161 East 75th. Our agent, who has been a highly successful agent on the Upper East Side for 22 years, was stunned. We were paying all-cash and had plenty of savings left over, post-closing, to satisfy any board. Likewise, our income, CPA-verified, was many times imaginably necessary. We are successful professionals and have no debt. Our six letters of recommendation were stellar, including from people who own 5th Ave co-ops, have served on their boards, and have known us for 40 years. We clearly outlined our pets would always stay at our home in CT and that we would be light, quiet users of the apartment. The board turned us down immediately, not even bothering to ask any questions or asking to meet us. Why? Of course, we'll never know for sure, but the only aspect we can imagine to have been an issue was the fact we are a married gay couple. A sobering conclusion, if true, about New York co-ops in this day and age. [less]
