3 East 78th street, designed by Charles Pierrepont Henry Gilbert (1861-1952), was erected circa 1899 for Edmund C. Converse during the same period that Gilbert designed the nearby Isaac Fletcher House at East 79 Street and Fifth Avenue, now the Ukrainian Institute.

Converse during the same period that Gilbert designed the nearby Isaac Fletcher House at East 79 Street and Fifth Avenue, now the Ukrainian Institute. Gilbert was also the architect for the Felix Warburg Mansion, now the Jewish Museum, and the Otto Kahn palazzo, now the Convent of the Sacred Heart. Located in one of the most prestigious locations on the Upper East Side, across from Central Park and near The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this limestone French Gothic confection is six stories high and frosted in lacy carvings, finials and Gothic fantasy. In 1964, 3 East 78th Street was converted from a private residence to a Condo.
