Misleading info from broker

Discussion about
When viewing an apartment for rent, I noticed a large, empty lot right opposite our building. I asked the broker at the time what was going to happen there and he said that his office had been in touch with the developer and that the people developing were not doing anything yet as they were looking to buy the other buildings on the same block. At the same time, he said that if I wanted the apt I had to put a deposit down, before income verification. The deposit would only be returned if I didn't pass the credit check. I have just spent one night in the building and the work has started in the lot right opposite. In hindsight it seems he was trying to get me committed quickly before i had a chance to do any due diligence. My question is, is there any way I can break my lease?
