Complex: Dunbar Apartments

The landmark Dunbar Apartments complex was constructed between1926-1928 by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and designed by architect Andrew J. Thomas. Recently renovated units are thoughtful, functional, and classically simple, with attention towards the practical necessities of modern living without compromising the beauty and detail of the Dunbar Apartment’s historical Harlem roots. Newer renovations feature wide-plank oak hardwood flooring with a light matte finish, recessed lighting in the common rooms, and petit globe pendants in the bedrooms. Modern kitchens boast stone counters, subway tile backsplash, and self-closing cabinetry. The stainless steel appliance package includes a dishwasher and microwave in addition to the gas range and refrigerator. Penny-round tiles in the bathrooms offer a nod to the past, as do the matte black hardware and fixtures throughout each unit.

The newly-restored, landmarked residential complex was named in honor of the famous African-American novelist and poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar. Occupying an entire city block, the Dunbar Apartments consist of six separate buildings surrounding a lush interior garden courtyard with an onsite management office and brand-new laundry facility. With their signature U-shaped design, each building was originally constructed to maximize air flow and sunlight to the individual apartments. Notable residents of the Dunbar include the explorer Matthew Henson (who, along with Robert Perry, discovered the North Pole), and author and civil rights activist, W.E.B Du Bois. On May 26, 1970, the Dunbar was designated a New York City landmark and in 1979 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
