Description

Originally known as the Imperial, this Neo-Grec brownstone, completed in 1883 by the architect Frederick T. Camp, is often described as a smaller cousin of the Dakota. Both buildings – completed a year apart — boast apartments with unusually high ceilings, original architectural details, working fireplaces and stained glass windows.

Both were also among the earliest apartment buildings constructed in Manhattan during the early boom in luxury housing.

Situated next to the Carlyle Hotel in a neighborhood rich with museums and designer shops, the Imperial stands out as one of the last gasps of New York’s Gilded Age. At the time the seven-story building was completed, the Real Estate Chronicle called its façade “a design of real dignity and beauty….exceedingly artistic.’’

It still is. Much of building’s original decorative exterior remains intact. Its entrance lobby, punctuated by marble details and an intricately patterned mosaic floor, has been lovingly preserved. Most of the building’s six-and-seven room apartments feature working fireplaces, original patterned mahogany floors and French doors.
