Building: Fairmont Manor

Fairmont Manor is a lovely well-maintained cooperative located on the northeast corner of 86th St and 1st Avenue. This postwar white brick building originally opened as a rental in 1964 and was converted to a cooperative in 1980. The apartments are large with floor plans that maximize living space, the hallmark of its architect, Philip Birnbaum. The building has 19 stories and approximately 220 units and an indoor parking garage which offers residents a discount on monthly rates. The Fairmont Manor has 24/7 door service and a large and capable maintenance staff as well as having the Resident Manager living in the building. Residents enjoy amenities that include a fully-equipped fitness room, beautifully-planted roof deck with ample seating, and a large laundry room. A Washer/Dryer combination in the apartment is considered on a case by case basis. Pets are welcome.
The Upper East Side is a well-serviced neighborhood with several spacious grocery stores, (Fairway and Whole Foods) within a couple of blocks, as well as an array of pharmacies, convenience stores, hair salons and restaurants. 401 East 86th Street is in close proximity to Carl Schurz Park and Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of New York since 1942. The park is home to two dog runs, a playground and The Promenade which runs parallel to FDR Drive. Residents of the neighborhood walk their dogs, bicycle and relax on the many benches where you can enjoy the East River views of Ward’s Island, the waters of Hell’s Gate, Roosevelt Island and Queens. The park is maintained by both the New York City Parks Dept. and the Carl Schurz Conservancy, the oldest park conservancy in the city. Public transportation is at your doorstep; the 86th St. Crosstown bus stops on the corner near the building entrance and around the corner on 1st Avenue, there is Select and Local bus service running north. The entire neighborhood is eagerly awaiting the December 2016 opening of the 2nd Avenue Subway. There will be an escalator entrance less than a block away.
