The Ansonia, one of the world’s legendary condominiums, primarily addressed as 2109 Broadway sits between West Seventy-third and West Seventy-fourth Streets on New York City’s ultra-chic Upper West Side. It is a notable example of Beaux-Arts architecture and embodies the elegance and opulence of the early 20th century. Designed by architect Paul E. Duboy and completed in 1904, the building features a striking limestone façade with intricate detailing, large mansard roofs, rounded corner turrets, elaborate balconies, and a richly adorned cornice. The grand staircase and ornate interiors further enhance its architectural splendor.

The history of The Ansonia is as rich as its design. Still known and referred to as the Ansonia Hotel, commissioned by William Earl Dodge Stokes, the building was designed to be the grandest residential hotel in Manhattan. Constructed between 1899 and 1904, it initially served as a luxurious hotel with apartments. Over time, The Ansonia transitioned to rental apartments in the mid-20th century and eventually became a condominium. In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, The Ansonia was designated a New York City Landmark in 1972.

The Ansonia stunning roof deck once housed chickens, ducks, and other animals. Today, current residents still enjoy the stunning roof deck, as well as other building amenities including a bicycle room, storage units, cold storage, and laundry facilities. The Ansonia employs a full-time door person and concierge, a live-in-superintendent, and an onsite residence manager. The Ansonia also offers a Parking Garage.

Throughout its history, The Ansonia has been home to numerous famous residents. Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, socialite and soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, and jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman all lived in the building at various times. Actress and director Angelica Huston also spent part of her childhood in The Ansonia.

The Ansonia is situated on the Upper West Side, one of New York City’s most desirable neighborhoods. This area is known for its rich cultural offerings, including the American Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center, and a variety of theaters and performing arts venues. The Upper West Side also boasts a diverse array of dining options, from fine dining restaurants to casual eateries, as well as family-owned and high-end retailers. The neighborhood’s proximity to Central Park and Riverside Park makes the Upper West Side easily on of the most desirable neighborhoods citywide.

The Ansonia holds significant importance on the Upper West Side, standing as a landmark of architectural grandeur and historical relevance. Its luxurious design and storied past contribute to the neighborhood’s rich history. Serving as a home to many prominent figures and witnessing the evolving landscape of New York City, The Ansonia symbolizes the opulence of a long gone era while continuing to be a prestigious residence in one of the most esteemed locations in the world.
