Building: 765 Park Avenue

When one thinks of New York City elegance, grandeur and those beautiful prewar apartment homes, 775 Park Avenue perfectly captures that image.

775 Park Avenue is a cooperative luxury building in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and was built in the late 1920s, constructed of limestone and brick. It made a grand impression with its Italian Renaissance design in the 20th century, when the city was one of the most populated cities in the world and right around the same time as developers were building Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers, and it is no less grand today.

Rosario Candela, the Italian-American architect who made a name for himself as the designer of several Upper East side residences, was famous for his understated elegant exterior style, but more than made up for that subtle style by creating grandiose interiors.

There are 14 stories and 47 homes within the cooperative building. Glamorous, graceful layouts and a genteel sense of elegant style are the main elements Candela sought to achieve for those living in the Upper East Side, once referred to as the “Silk Stocking District” and Park Avenue, known as “Millionaire’s Row.”

Catering to the wealthy, his designs focused on first impressions when entering a home — grand foyers that were more of a gallery and embraced comfortable living with beautiful views — with every amenity possible that defined luxury living.

Four of these luxury homes have their own separate entrance on Park Avenue; one a 12-room duplex that occupies over 100-feet of the avenue. The über wealthy reside here; oil barons, entertainment moguls, financiers and those who want luxury living with history, character and an large, urban space that feels like a private home.

Enormous rooms with soaring ceilings, curved staircases, traditional moldings, herringboned floors, wood-paneled libraries, several fireplaces, formal dining rooms, servant quarters and luxurious baths and kitchens were standard then and have been renovated to create 21st century luxury living.

Some luxury, multi-level homes contain enormous, windowed chef’s kitchens updated to include stainless-steel, top-of-the line appliances, granite countertops and custom cabinets. Many master bedrooms have wood-burning fireplaces and large closets with separate dressing rooms. Baths are marble and limestone, spa-like, large and sophisticated.

Floors are hardwoods, most containing the original herringbone. Each home has at least two fireplaces, some up to six.
