Building: 56 Thomas Street

In the heart of TriBeCa’s landmark South Historic District, 56 Thomas Street is a boutique loft building with six private, full-floor residences. Originally commissioned by developer Louis Lese in 1897, No. 56 was designed by New York architect Quinby & Broome in the Renaissance Revival style. Faced in brick trimmed with cast iron and terra cotta, the façade has three large North-facing windows per story, as well as Southern and Western exposures. The windows are set into a framework of thick iron mullions, and framed by banded stone pilasters.

No. 56 was recently converted into a boutique condominium by Sanba, the design firm of renowned Italian architect Aldo Andreoli. In Andreoli’s design, the century-old brick façade transitions to six modern, 1,800+ sq. ft. full-floor loft residences, served by a keyed elevator, each with a private Juliette balcony overlooking historic Thomas Street. No. 56 fully incorporates Andreoli’s core design philosophy of open-space loft living and sustainable architecture: each loft features original bay windows, 11’+ ceilings, original wood floors, and the open flexible layout characteristic of a TriBeCa loft. No. 56 is well maintained by a hands-on super and also features low monthly carrying charges.
