Building: 538 East 84th Street

The Chapin is situated on a peaceful tree lined street alongside lovely Brownstone homes. The Chapin consists of three adjacent buildings (530-534-538). 530 and 538 are elevator buildings each with their own laundry room and storage units. 534 is a five story walk-up building without a laundry room or storage. The three buildings were built in 1910 and then remodeled and combined in 1954. This Co-Op has a live-in Superintendent.

The Chapin is conveniently located near the M31 and M86 bus lines. The M31 runs North/South on York Avenue and East/West across 57th Street. The M86 travels across 86th Street, passing through Central Park to the west side. The 4/5/6 trains stop at East 86th St. and Lexington Ave…and, in 2016, the 2nd Avenue subway!

538 East 84th Street is just a hop, skip and a jump away from Carl Schurz Park. This picturesque park, partially hidden along the East River, is one of the city’s best-concealed secrets (Shhh! We like it that way). A stroll along the promenade provides beautiful views of the river, the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, the R.F.Kennedy Bridge, Randall’s and Wards islands, and, of course, Gracie Mansion, the 18th century mansion that serves as the Mayor’s official residence.

Carl Schurz Park is one of the city’s most dog-friendly—two dog runs, one for smaller dogs and one for larger dogs, offer plenty of space for pups to run around and mingle, while the promenade offers a lovely place to stroll, with or without a furry companion. A playground at the end of the park holds fun for kids of all ages including a basketball court.

The park’s plentiful green space is a lovely place for reading, picnicking, people-watching, and, when the weather gets nice, sunbathing. With all this, Carl Schurz is certainly a great escape from the bustling city.
