Building: 508 East 6th Street

In 1984 an energetic group of New Yorker’s identified and decided to purchase a building at 508 East 6th Street, in the East Village. Fortunately, the six parties all came together with different backgrounds and a diverse set of skills enabling them to design and re-build what was then a derelict structure. They re-built #508 from the basement up and created an entirely new structure. Only the front façade remains from the original building that dates to 1900. Don’t be deceived by the old façade, the interior systems are new and modern. Plumbing, wiring, windows, floors and walls were replaced, and all date to the late 1980’s. After a four year re-build, in 1988, the six owners closed on their new homes. They created the Sclera Housing Development FD, participating in the HDFC program. Contained within the building are four simplex apartments and two duplex apartments. A common garden was created in the back yard of the co-op. The garden is lushly planted and features a lovely wisteria arbor and free blooming roses. This space is shared and maintained by all residents. Quiet gatherings, outdoor dining and grilling are encouraged.

This HDFC co-op is self-managed and has excellent financials. All filings and procedures required by the HDFC are followed. Maximum income restrictions do apply, insuring that this building stays available to middle income New Yorkers. This co-op is also pet friendly.
