Building: 487 Broadway

Formerly “The Silk Exchange Building” circa 1895, developed and built by John Townsend Williams in collaboration with William Birkmire. The 12 stories and 200 foot wide expanse was made possible by the development of steel framing and skyscraper construction techniques of the late 19th century. The top 3 stories are beautifully decorated with terra cotta baroque ornamentation. The building is made of stone, brick, iron, terra cotta along with steel construction. Purchased by “Western Millionaire” James B. Haggin in 1899 for $850,000 and known as the Haggin Building. 451 Broome Street was converted to 25 residential loft units in 1977. Currently 23 residential lofts, 12 stories plus penthouse level and 2 commercial ground floor spaces. The floors are approximately 5600 square feet and most floors have two units. Special features include high ceilings, large windows and three exposures. There are 3 elevators. This intimate cooperative building is well-managed and derives income from its commercial leases. The lobby has been painstakingly restored to its original grandeur. A quintessential landmark SoHo historic architectural treasure.
