Building: 435 East 57th Street

This is a highly-civilized, Emery Roth designed, Bing and Bing constructed, classic Sutton Place vicitnity cooperative. It’s located two buildings west of Sutton, on the north side of 57th Street. The original plat called for 16 stories plus penthouse, with four apartments per floor, but there have been several combinations over the years. The A and B line face south from the public rooms and master bedrooms, and the C and D lines are smaller and more or less face north. There are two internal staircases, and a service elevator. The coop does not allow washer/dryers in the apartments, unless they were in place as of 1989. The air-conditioning can be central, in the window, or through the wall depending on the apartment; the coop allows all. There are no summer work rules, and the ambiance is of an elegance in keeping with the location.
