The Dietz Lantern building was built in 1887 by R. W. Tieffenberg as a seven-story building for the R.E. Dietz Company lantern factory. There was a fire in 1897 and it was rebuilt by William J. Fryer and increased to nine stories. The footprint is 75 feet of frontage on Greenwich Street and 125 feet on Laight Street. The Romanesque Revival design of the original building was maintained. In 1996 the building was converted to 28 Luxury condominiums with a full-time doorman and an underground garage. Excluding the penthouse the apartments, the lofts range in size from 1800 to 5300 square feet. There are several combined units. Intrinsic architectural details include high barrel-vaulted ceilings, exposed brick and columns. The serene lobby features a cascading waterfall wall and access to an interior courtyard garden. There is a full-time doorman and superintendent. Some of the units include private parking spaces, basement storage and wood-burning fireplaces. The apartments have up to 4 units on a floor. The penthouse unit features a private roof deck and outdoor lap pool. The Dietz Lantern building was at the forefront of the North Tribeca residential development wave of the late 1990s. It has always been one of Tribeca’s premier iconic landmarked buildings, extremely well-managed and relatively low carrying costs.
