392 West Street. Aka 6 Weehawken St

This two and a half story shingled, 2400 SF wooden house is said to be the oldest house still standing in Greenwich Village.

Built on land that once had been part of the Newgate State Prison (a colonial jail), No 6 Weehawken Street, with it’s second entrance on 392 West Street, was built in 1849 by Shipbuilder George M. Munson.

Munson bought the remnants of the Weehawken market (where farmers from Weehawken, NJ, sold their produce in the 1830s) and run the building as a saloon until 1867. It was one of the first documented liquor businesses in the area. It later served as a gambling den, an oyster house, and a pool hall.

The current owner is said to have plans of turning the building into a museum dedicated to the history of water.
