Building: 27 West 55th Street

This charming house was built in 1924 and has been an established co-op since 1949. It is a ten-story pre-war building and consists of 35 residential units and 2 professional/commercial units on the ground floor. The well-kept lobby has a beautiful sweeping staircase and the brass entry doors are kept brightly polished. The live-in super is housed in a rear apartment of the first floor. There are two elevators and two stairwells in the core of the building, which service the four apartments on each floor. The interior architecture includes beamed ceilings, fireplaces, two exits in each apartment, windowed kitchens and baths, and original nine-over-nine windows in the front apartments. The fourth, sixth, and eighth floors have pretty iron topiary stands on the façade. Many apartments have altered their floorplan over the years, converting dining rooms to bedrooms. The board is warm but careful about approvals, and prefers owner occupants to pied-a-terres (but consider each purchase on a case-by-case basis).
