House: 245 Water Street

This charming former Greek Revival warehouse was erected in 1836 to house the Hendricks Brothers Copper firm founded by Harmon Hendricks; famous for helping to transform the newly established United States from a copper importer to a copper manufacturer. Notably, the Hendricks Brothers customers included the famous patriot and metalsmith Paul Revere, The US Navy and Robert Fulton among many others and supplied the copper sheathing for the hull of the Savannah, the first transatlantic steamship and for Robert Fulton’s steamboats.

The ground floor of 245 Water Street features 6 large granite piers with Tuscan style capitals that support the brick façade above its wide granite architrave with cornice. The four upper stories of this 2 family dwelling have been rebuilt since 1836. The ornate metal roof cornice with grooved scroll brackets and modillions lends evidence of a late 19th century alteration.
