Building: 160 West 73rd Street

This landmarked building is also known as Sherman Studios Studios and has a very unique history. Back in the days the apartments were used to hold grand pianos, which resulted in very heavy duty hardwood floors that have a layer of rubber underneath to make them sound proof.

According to New York Times article from May 27th, 1928 that described the construction of the building:
“A notable feature of this building is the fact that it will be scientifically sound-proofed, even to the doors. The walls dividing each studio are not only double walls, but the building has been so planned that the studios are separated from each other by intervening chambers, and from the corridors by waiting rooms, pantries, bathrooms etc. In these days of radio, the sound-proof feature should be an interesting feature of all classes of buildings, and the innovation of sound-proofing on this building may be an object lesson worth emulating.”

Now days most of the apartments have been divided into one bedrooms and studios and have been renovated with modern kitchens and stainless steel appliances, but still preserved all the prewar charm and layouts. Sometimes featuring enormous 20 by 20 living rooms and very generous layouts.

The building has a 24hr attendant, two elevators and a renovated laundry room.
