Building: 126 Chambers Street

Built in 1857, 126 Chambers is a five-story, Italianate-style store-and-loft building featuring cast iron and marble façade. Located between West Broadway and Church Street, 126 Chambers street sits in the TriBeCa South Extension Historic District.

The building may have originally been an early nineteenth-century house that was enlarged and reconstructed, at a time when the residential streets to the west and north of City Hall Park were being rapidly redeveloped with new commercial buildings for the dry goods trade.

The building was thus erected primarily to provide large and open interior space for the storage and selling of goods, which explains its rich mercantile past. Over the years, the building housed a variety of dry goods, hardware, light and cutlery trades, as well as a perfume and flagrances manufacturer. This was notably where Avon (originally California Perfume Company) was founded in 1886.

126 Chambers is a self-managed boutique coop. There are four residential units and one commercial space in the building.

The 1,2,3 trains are situated in the near corner of the street and 4,5,6,R are nearby. Whole Foods, Hudson River Park, PS 234 are a couple of blocks away.
