Building: 117 East 72nd Street

In the mid 1920’s George Stern bought several adjacent brownstones on the north side of 72nd Street between Lexington and Park Avenue, which he razed in order to build this distinguished 15 story Co-op at no. 117 E 72nd. Construction completed in 1928, Mr. Stern promptly moved to new his home on the 3rd floor selling the balance of residences as “build to suit” apartments to wealthy New Yorkers. The beautiful red brick structure features a limestone base topped by two stories of smooth limestone with wrought-iron Juliette balconies, and a classical broken pediment crowns the green-canopied entrance with imposing bronze doors. The elegant vestibule has Italian marble floors, leather seating and two elevators servicing 15 stories of grand scale homes, including half floor apartments on the lower five floors and full floor apartments on six through fifteen. The Co-op is pet friendly, it does not allow financing and renting is not permitted. There is a 2% flip tax on each sale paid by the purchaser.
