Description

Designed by renowned architect J. E. R. Carpenter and completed in 1928, 1060 Fifth is a handsome pre-war cooperative, converted in 1953, with a limestone base distinguishing the first three floors and a brown brick, neo-Italian Renaissance-style facade demarcating the remainder of the building.

Rhythmic arches, fluted pilasters, decorated panels with escutcheons and foliation further distinguish Carpenter’s design. The side street entrance on the north corner of 87th Street leads into one of the most elegant lobbies on Fifth Avenue. With only 48 apartments and 14 floors, each with grand layouts and grand-scaled rooms, ranging in size from 2000 square feet to over 6000 square feet, 1060 is arguably the most sought after white glove cooperative in Carnegie Hill. The lower floors have 10-foot ceilings and the higher floors have 11-foot ceilings. Park-facing apartments command magnificent views of Central Park and the reservoir. The location is superb, on Museum Mile steps from the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as scores of restaurants, fine food shops and clothing boutiques, with the added advantage of being one block north of where most Fifth Avenue parades end. Residences each have private storage in the basement. There is a new, state-of-the-art gym in the building, as well as numerous world-class gyms in walking distance. Nearby public bus transportation is extensive. 1060 Fifth, like most prewar buildings, does not have a garage, though there is a garage directly across the street and several more in the area. The majority of the City’s independent schools are in walking distance.
