In a small enclave of Manhattan, the Midtown neighborhood of Turtle Bay has several notable buildings with architecture ranging from Art Deco to Romanesque Revival. Between Tudor City and Beekman Place, its quiet, tree-lined streets have beautiful brownstones, picturesque parks and the dramatically bold 100 United Nations Plaza.

Completed in 1987, it has 51 stories of 267 apartment homes with 22 penthouses that shape its pyramid top, each having spacious terraces. Rising nearly 560 feet, it faces the formal gardens and flags of the United Nations building. These luxury homes are as impressive as their world-famous location.

Constructed of brick and glass, the building appears dark brown/black and rather intimidating; perhaps on purpose to define its place among its landmark environment. Its monolithic appearance with jutted angles and setbacks is considered one of Manhattan’s most stunning high-rises and sits proudly among the East Midtown skyline, along with its other notable neighbors, including the nearby Chrysler Building.

The developers, The Albanese Organization, envisioned a world-class residential luxury development that would not only serve as a home to the world’s diplomats but those Manhattanites desiring to live in an area where views of the East River, Manhattan skyline and lushly-landscaped gardens are standard.

The entrance to the lobby is a drive-in porte-cochère that is adjacent to a multi-level 11,400 square foot garden and plaza of water features (designed by Thomas Balsley Associates) and lush landscaping. Residents enter through a elegant and richly designed lobby constructed of fabric, marble, bronze and wood materials.

Der Scutt Architects was the design architect and Schuman, Lichtenstein, Claman, and Efron (SLCE) was the base building architect. Special attention was paid to providing these homes with energy-efficient heating and cooling systems as well as superb interior finishings.

Features in some of the luxury units include marble baths, large master suites with en suite baths and dressing rooms, walk-in closets, gourmet kitchens with Subzero and top-of-the-line appliances, wood and marble floors and gorgeous terraces. Some penthouse units are as large as six-bedroom, six baths and have floor-to-ceiling windows to take in breathtaking city and water views.

Common areas include a business room, entertainment lounge, 5,000 square-foot fitness center, onsite laundry room, attached 24-hour attended garage and of course, plenty of gorgeous outdoor space.

Grand and glamorous, 100 United Nations Plaza stands as a “sculptural tower” in a neighborhood of Manhattan known for its elegant streets, landmark buildings and easy access to present and past world destinations.
